Lose Weight As A KidTalking with other parents about their kids habits is a common past time of mine. The topic of weight loss comes up after I meet new parents and they find out what I do. Sometimes they ask me how to lose weight as a kid and this is one of my favorite ones to answer.

Since WOD #1 I had no idea that I would have this kind of an impact on my kids let alone other kids. All of the movements will provide the exact blue print to lose weight as a kid. It is intended for adults, but really the movements are all body weight movements so that means the WODs fit the protocol that the ACSM recommends for kids and weight loss.

How To Lose Weight As A Kid brings about another question…

Is strength training safe for kids?

The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) says:

Contrary to the traditional belief that strength training is dangerous for children or that it could lead to growth plate disturbances, the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) contends that strength training can be a safe and effective activity for this age group, provided that the programs are properly designed and competently supervised. It must be emphasized, however, that strength training is a specialized form of physical conditioning that involves the progressive use of a wide range of resistive loads and a variety of training modalities. As such, instruction and supervision should be provided by qualified professionals to ensure that strength-training programs are consistent with the needs, goals and abilities of each participant.

How can a child lose weight fast?

First see a doctor to get cleared to start a formal or informal exercise routine. ACSM recommends supervision with said routine, therefore my professional suggestion for supervision is to do the WODs with your kid(s). It can be a family activity. As a kid I was overweight myself. The locker room was my least favorite place when I was in middle school. I got poked and prodded at because I didn’t have a six pack. It wasn’t until the summer before my freshman year of high school I lost some weight and got active.

My parents made me get a job, which I am grateful for today. I thought I was pretty smart when I got my first job at the camper dealership where my Dad worked. That summer I moved more at ate less. In all reality I ate more, because I had to. I ate less crappy foods and ate more lean meats, fruits and some veggies (versus none before). Before this job I ate a ton of candy and played a ton of video games. The result was I thought I weighed a ton and kids around me sure reminded me of that. In middle school I weighed in around 230 pounds. When I started my freshman year of high school I weighed 150 pounds. Quite a bit of a drop in weight all due to a change in movement and what I was eating.

I began the WODs in 2015 and had no idea that my kids would benefit from this crazy idea of mine. The year is 2017 as I write this and my daughter Molly started Kindergarten. She has some pretty impressive muscle tone already (As seen in picture below). I’m impressed with her and my son’s drive to be active. A daily dose of movement or activity or formal exercise is recommended. ACSM says 60 minutes is ideal. We do all of that in our home. Acting like a kid is easy for me (My wife actually has three kids, wink wink).

Lose Weight As A Kid

When choosing what works for you and your child be sure to make it fun. Having fun is the up most important component to a successful and consistent movement plan. To lose weight as a kid is important because let’s face it, nobody wants to bury their child. As Americans, we are trending in this direction though. For the first time ever in human history our children may not outlive their parents due to childhood obesity.

As parents we are the leaders for our children. To lose weight as a kids is just something fifty years ago would of been crazy to talk about. Here we are though and being active starts with the parents. When I made the video for WOD 233 my kids did not want me to hit record, but I did anyways.

Watch the video below and you’ll see how much fun we have. You too can have fun with your kids and help them lose weight as a kid. Then when they get a little older they can find movement fun and they might even create their own WODs.

In conclusion, lead by example parents. We are the leaders for our children and they depend on us to teach them. Let’s eliminate the conversation of how to lose weight as a kid by preventing it from happening. If you can’t prevent it, then start involving your kid(s) within your movement/exercise plan. If you don’t HAVE an exercise plan, then Start at the Pre-Test from the Cheat Sheet and they will follow your lead (Eventually wink wink).

Have Fun!
